Antioxidants Fight Free Radicals
For some time, antioxidants have been a hot topic in nutrition, but a lot of us really do not know much about what they are or what they do.
What is an Antioxidant?
Our bodies are battlegrounds. Normal body functions, such as breathing and physical activity, as well as other lifestyle habits, such as smoking, produce substances called free radicals. These free radicals can then cause damage to healthy cells. Antioxidants are compounds that bond with free radicals, thereby preventing potential damage to your body.
So where do these free radicals, come from? They can come from almost anywhere. For example, they can come from external factors such as pollution, the effects of UV light, cigarette smoke, and other harmful chemicals in the air. Free radicals can also be formed through normal bodily processes, the metabolic processes that make us function. Under normal circumstances, the free radicals that our bodies make themselves are mopped up, or neutralized, by the body’s own processes. However, our bodies can’t eliminate all of the free radicals. There are also certain circumstances, like when we exercise, when we produce more free radicals than our bodies can deal with.
In order to combat the effects of free radicals, we need antioxidants.
Perhaps the best-known antioxidant nutrients are Vitamins A, C, and E. In addition, fruits and vegetables contain literally hundreds of different chemical compounds, many of which act as antioxidants. For example, carotenoids like beta-carotene (the pigment that gives carrots their characteristic color). There are many other "phytochemicals" (chemicals from plants) that act as antioxidants. Examples include the chemical components found in grape seed and pine bark.
These and other antioxidants may help to promote better health.
